So, although it feels more like it today, yesterday was the first day of spring, and that can only mean one thing here in the Delaware Vally…
FREE WATER ICE AT RITA’S!

People were ready for their first water ice of the season.
I’m sure the lines started early, and they were still there when we arrived at around 6pm. (Or was it 5? I don’t remember, and the clock on my camera was wrong). I counted about 30 people in front of us.
Nevertheless, the lines moved quickly, and it only took my mom and I about 12 minutes to get our freebies.
We went traditional–my mom got lemon; I got cherry!
Here’s my mom with hers:

OH, yea! I forgot to mention–before stopping off at Rita’s, we paid a visit to Dunkin’ Donuts, where our friendly neighborhood java-wallah was giving out free iced coffee!
(The only iced coffee I really like is those Starbucks vanilla Frappachinios that come in the little bottles. What can I say; I’m not much of a coffee guy. Still, this was free, and it wasn’t bad.)
But two freebies weren’t all that yesterday had in store for us.
On the way back to my grandmom’s, we passed Lena’s Water Ice.
Not to be out-done, they were also giving out free small cups!

Now say what you’d like, but I’ve never been particularly impressed by Rita’s.
Yes, I know that’s sacreligious around here, but it just doesn’t do it for me.
Rita’s, while a relative newcomer, is the 500-pound gorilla of mid-Atlantic water ice. For some reason, everyone loves Rita, and she is everywhere.
Now that wouldn’t be bad in and of itself, but I’ve always found her ices to be:
- Too wet.
- Overpriced.
- Over-hyped.
I’m not saying it’s bad, mind you; it’s just not the best.
So, I was VERY happy to see that Lena was giving out free water ice, as well; hers (like most of Rita’s competitors) are FAR superior, in taste, texture, and price.
But, believe it or not, there was no line.

Sure, Lena doesn’t have as good of a location as Rita, nor does she have the advertising budget. But still, people wouldn’t know quality if it bit them in the nose.
Fortunately, some people started pull up as I got back into the car to enjoy my free sugar.

With my two free water ices and my free coffee safely procured, and with people starting to line up at Lena’s, my faith in humanity was restored.
