I have this mental list of things to talk about on my website when I have nothing else to talk about. I think I’ll use one of them today.
I don’t talk about music much because I really don’t know what I’m talking about and I usually end up saying something embarassingly stupid. And because I have taste for shit. Fortunately (or unfortunately) it’s really only the die-hard music fans that get me talking about music. On the bright side, that means it’s rare that I look dumb, but on the other hand I usually end up looking extra dumb to people who know what they’re talking about. Oh well, c’est la vie.
That said, I still feel extremely comfortable asserting that A l’interieur (One the Inside) by Maczde Carpate is the best CD of the year. I actually mentioned it on my website before, back in February (I think) when I picked it up. Obviously, it’s French, but that shouldn’t deter you. The lyrics are great, but it’s strong enough musically to stand on its own. I’d definately classify it as Indie Rock, but it has a little bit of a raggae and jazzy flavor (at least I think that’s what it is. Remember what I said about me not knowing what I’m talking about?). Yea, I think indie is definately a safe way to describe it: I read two very good reviews of it in a couple of online French ‘zines, but aside from the reviews and myself, I don’t think anyone else bought it anywhere. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t! You can pick it up on amazon.fr for about $25 with shipping. Yea, it’s a little steep, but I’d say it’s the best CD I own, so if you have a little discressionary income that you’d like to do something new with, I’d definately recommend MacZde Carpate.
I hadn’t planned on this, but hell, while I’m on the subject of music, I might as well go ahead and list my 10 favorite (at the moment) songs, BNL and otherwise (it wouldn’t be fair not to differentiate). I really like top-10 lists and who knows when I’ll have this opportunity again.
